Long Prairie Loop (south leg) at Sandy McNabb. After 11 years of doing this blog, I am thrilled to finally do a first-hand report on Sandy McNabb. Starting out at Sandy McNabb. Conditions were pretty good with occasional hazards such as dirt, rocks, and grass but they were nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

Sandy McNabb Campground is found in Sheep River Provincial Park, 21 KM west of Turner Valley on Highway 546. Campsite Amenities Reservable Powersite (we normally try and avoid power sites when possible as it generally is more expensive) Pit/Vaulted Toilets Flush Toilets / Showers (closed due to Covid) Water-Taps Playground Firepit & Picnic Table

Beginning from Sandy McNabb campground, this route crosses Sheep River and heads up the ridge to the right. The creek crossing is easy when frozen but may prove to be a challenge and an off-trail bushwhack if water levels are high. This route is not well defined and will involve a lot of route-finding.

The Sandy McNabb cross-country ski area is an under appreciated gem, largely due to the variable snow conditions there. Due to being on the front ranges, it gets subjected to warmer weather and chinook winds, which means the trails often need a bit more snow.
